Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father passed away, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be cleaner or waitress in order for them to remain alive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She attended school there. The school she was attending after only two years in order to pursue the profession of acting. The path was difficult to pursue. While she was offered a job in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs came her way. As a hat check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first permanent acting gig. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
